Your Journey to Better Health Starts Here

Welcome to your personalized path towards managing lipedema. We know that taking this first step can feel overwhelming, but we're here to walk alongside you every step of the way. In this section, we'll guide you through our comprehensive treatment process, designed with your unique needs in mind.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Our Surgical Pathways

Following your confirmed lipedema diagnosis, the journey towards surgical relief begins with thorough planning and preparation. At Lipedema Team, we've developed a proprietary, evidence-based surgical pathway focused on maximizing safety, optimizing outcomes, and supporting your long-term well-being. Here’s a step-by-step guide through our specialized protocols:

PHASE 1

Pre-Surgical Optimization Cycles: Preparing Your Body for Success

This is where our proprietary protocols truly begin to set the stage for your transformation. Unlike approaches that rush into surgery, our remote pre-surgical phase (typically 1-3+ months) is essential. Based on extensive research and outcomes from hundreds of patients, this program uses targeted nutrition, specialized exercises, compression guidance, and lifestyle adjustments to significantly reduce tissue inflammation, improve skin health, and optimize your body’s readiness for surgery. This preparation is critical for minimizing surgical risks, enhancing lymphatic resilience, speeding up post-op recovery and ensuring the best possible foundation for healing and truly lasting results.

PHASE 2

Strategic Surgical Planning: Safety is Non-Negotiable

Deciding which affected body areas to address requires careful planning guided by our unwavering commitment to your safety. We strictly adhere to evidence-based protocols developed through research and extensive patient data: a 5-hour maximum surgical time per procedure (minimizing anesthesia exposure, risk of infection and physiological stress) and a safe fat/fluid removal limit - up to 7% to 8% of your body weight to prevent dangerous complications.

If treating all desired areas exceeds these limits, we implement medically necessary staging, scheduling subsequent surgeries with a minimum 3-month healing interval to allow full physiological recovery. This safety-first approach, integral to our proprietary protocols, ensures each procedure is performed under optimal conditions, maximizing outcomes while minimizing risk.

PHASE 3

The Surgical Transformation

On the day of your procedure, before heading into surgery, we utilize advanced technology for precise planning and progress tracking. You'll undergo a full 360-degree infrared (IR) body scan. This state-of-the-art scan creates a detailed 3D map of your body, accurately measuring limb volume and capturing your unique proportions. This baseline scan is invaluable; we use it later to objectively demonstrate the volume reduction achieved and visually overlay the transformative changes from your surgery. Following this precise mapping, your surgery takes place within one of our specialized suites, designed for the unique needs of lipedema patients. Our expert team employs lymphatic-sparing Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL).

Precision Care Surgical Suite™: Ideal for Stages 1-2, focusing on precise tissue removal with our expert 2-surgeon team.

Total Transformation Surgical Suite™: Recommended for optimal aesthetic refinement in Stages 1-2 (includes advanced skin tightening/cellulite tech) and required for the complexities of Stages 3-4 (or cases needing skin resection), utilizing our 3-surgeon team for enhanced capabilities and surgeon fatigue reduction.

Regardless of the suite, the focus remains on safe, effective, lymphatic-sparing tissue removal.

PHASE 4

Initiating Critical Healing Phase (days 1-4)

The moment your transformative surgery concludes, your recovery begins under the immediate, direct supervision of our highly experienced clinical team within our world-class facilities. These critical healing days 1-4 are absolutely foundational, regardless of whether your recovery plan includes the 14-Day or 21-Day program.

Our specialized post-op protocols focus intensely on ensuring your tissue stabilization, expertly managing the initial post-surgical fluid dynamics inherent to lipedema procedures, maintaining your comfort through proactive pain control, and providing vigilant, round-the-clock monitoring by nurses and physicians specifically trained in post-lipedema surgery care. This often includes initiating Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) early on to significantly enhance tissue oxygenation, reduce initial swelling and inflammation, combat potential infection risks, and accelerate the natural healing processes at a cellular level. This period of intensive, expert care and physiological support is far more than just rest; it’s about creating the optimal biological environment and laying the critical groundwork, ensuring your body is perfectly prepared to transition smoothly and benefit fully from the intensive, specialized therapeutic phase that commences next.

PHASE 5

Therapeutic Recovery Phase (days 5-21)

This is the core of our mandatory post-operative program and where our proprietary recovery protocols make a profound difference. Starting around Day 5, you enter the critical window for lymphatic adaptation and tissue healing. You receive daily specialized therapies (expert MLD, Godoy Method, specific physiotherapy, hyperbaric chamber HBOT, photobiomodulation, DeepSlim and other advanced modalities depending on your suite) designed to actively manage inflammation, guide lymphatic drainage, prevent excessive fibrosis, and promote optimal tissue remodeling. The 14-Day Program covers this most vital biological window. The recommended 21-Day Program extends this intensive therapeutic support through the early tissue stabilization phase, offering enhanced benefits for long-term contour, tissue health, and functional recovery – a crucial investment, especially for complex cases.

PHASE 6

Lifelong Continuous Support

Achieving great surgical results is just the beginning of your enhanced wellness journey. Our commitment extends far beyond your stay in Mexico City, focusing on your long-term success. Before you leave, we ensure you've mastered essential self-care techniques. We establish a clear plan for ongoing management, provide virtual follow-up consultations, and readily collaborate with your home-based therapists and physicians.

Many of our patients find immense benefit in transitioning seamlessly into one of our specialized remote conservative lipedema care cycles (like the Lipedema Management Optimization Cycle™ or Advanced Lipedema Management Cycle™) after their initial surgical recovery. These popular programs provide the support, ongoing expert guidance, accountability and community connection needed to maintain your surgical gains, continue optimizing your health, and ensure sustained success in managing lipedema for life. We are your dedicated resource and lifelong partners in your health.

Frequently asked questions

1
Do you offer surgical packages shorter than 14 or 21 days?

Our priority is your best possible surgical outcome and world-class lipedema care. We offer 14-day and 21-day all-inclusive recovery programs. We do not offer stays shorter than 14 days because our extensive experience and medical protocols indicate that this duration is the minimum necessary to adequately manage the critical initial phase of post-operative healing, provide essential specialized therapies, and ensure your well-being before you travel home. Our commitment is to your best possible recovery, and we believe anything less than 14 days would not meet the standard of care required for effective lipedema treatment and a safe return home.

In short - you can definitely extend your stay with us beyond 14 or 21 days, just like many of our patients choose to do, but you can't make it shorter because we just don't believe it's right for surgical lipedema patients.

2
What logistical support is included in your all-inclusive surgical suites?

We believe your primary focus during your surgical journey should be on your preparation, healing, and recovery. Therefore, our all-inclusive surgical suites are designed to manage all logistical aspects of your stay in Mexico City, allowing you to rest and recuperate without added stress. From the moment you arrive until your departure, we aim to provide a seamless and supportive experience.

You can extend your stay if you wish to undergo further therapeutical cycles at our clinic.

Dedicated Patient Coordinator: a personal concierge (a Lipedema Team staff member) to assist you with scheduling, local information, and any needs that may arise during your stay.

Our goal is to handle all the details so you can concentrate fully on your health and well-being.

3
What are the symptoms of Lipedema?

Lipedema primarily manifests as disproportionate fat accumulation in the lower and upper extremities, causing pain, heaviness, and sensitivity. Patients often experience easy bruising and mobility limitations. By recognizing these symptoms, we can provide targeted treatments that support your active lifestyle and enhance your overall well-being.

4
How is Lipedema diagnosed?

Diagnosing lipedema involves a detailed physical examination and an assessment of your medical history. Key indicators include increased limb volume, pain, heaviness, and a family history of lipedema. Additional tests, such as ultrasound, help us evaluate the severity and ensure a precise diagnosis. Our thorough approach ensures you receive the best possible care tailored to your needs.

5
What treatment options are available for Lipedema?

Our treatment options include:

Conservative treatments - Hyperbaric therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, physiotherapy, exercise, dietary counseling, and mental health therapy to address depression and low self-esteem are essential components of managing lipedema.

We employ specialized techniques for advanced cases requiring surgical intervention. One of our key methods is Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL), a cutting-edge technology that uses a vibrating cannula to gently and efficiently remove excess fat, minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues and promoting faster recovery. Additionally, we prioritize skin retention techniques to ensure optimal contouring and prevent sagging, focusing on the aesthetic aspect of surgery to enhance how you look and feel post-procedure. Each treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs, aiming to achieve the best results and improve your quality of life. You can learn more about our treatment process here.

6
Is Lipedema treatment covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage for lipedema treatment varies by provider and policy. We recommend reviewing your policy's terms and conditions and discussing with your insurer. Some providers, like UnitedHealthcare, offer coverage under specific criteria. Our team is here to help you navigate these requirements, ensuring you receive the necessary care and support.

7
How can lifestyle changes impact Lipedema?

Lifestyle changes play a crucial role in managing lipedema symptoms and preventing progression. A balanced diet can reduce inflammation, and low-impact exercises like swimming and yoga improve mobility and manage pain. Regular use of compression garments and lymphatic drainage massages further aid in reducing swelling and enhancing your overall well-being.

8
What are the risks associated with Lipedema surgery?

Surgical treatments, like water-assisted liposuction, carry risks such as lymphatic system injury, infections, contour deformities, and changes in skin sensitivity. We discuss these risks with you, ensuring you are fully informed and comfortable with your treatment plan. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we take every precaution to ensure the best possible outcomes.

9
How long is the recovery period after Lipedema surgery?

Recovery typically ranges from 3 to 6 weeks. Initially, you may experience pain, swelling, and bruising. Most patients can resume light activities within two weeks, but intense physical efforts should be avoided for at least a month. We provide comprehensive postoperative care, including the use of compression garments and physical therapy, to support your recovery and ensure optimal results.

10
Can Lipedema reoccur after treatment?

Long-term management of lipedema involves maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent recurrence. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and the ongoing use of compression garments. Our team offers continuous support and follow-up care to help you manage symptoms and maintain the benefits of your treatment, empowering you to live a fuller, healthier life. Regular monitoring and adjustments to your treatment plan are essential to ensure lasting success and well-being.

11
How does lipedema affect mental health?

Living with lipedema can significantly impact mental health, leading to feelings of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. The physical symptoms, such as pain and mobility limitations, combined with the emotional burden, can be overwhelming. Our holistic treatment approach includes mental health support to address these challenges. We offer counseling and therapy to help you manage the emotional aspects of lipedema, empowering you to improve your mental well-being and overall quality of life.

12
What is Lipedema and how is it different from obesity?

Lipedema is a chronic condition primarily affecting women, characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat in the legs and arms. Unlike obesity, where fat is distributed evenly, lipedema fat is disproportionate, often painful, and can lead to heaviness and sensitivity in the affected areas. Understanding this distinction allows us to provide compassionate and effective care tailored to your unique needs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to managing your health.

13
Can Lipedema be cured?

While there's no definitive cure for lipedema, you can change how lipedema affects your life. Our focus is on significantly managing and alleviating symptoms through personalized treatment plans. These plans include lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, dietary counseling, and, when necessary, surgical interventions. Our holistic approach aims to improve your quality of life, helping you feel better and more empowered on your journey to wellness.
